Exploring Scandinavian Rhythms, with Jens Linell

About the episode

In this sixth episode of the show, I’m speaking with Swedish percussion player Jens Linell. Jens is a well-known musician on the Scandinavian trad scene, through bands like SVER and GKN5. He is also a very thoughtful person with a lot of interesting views on folk music, so I knew he would be a great person to have on the show!

In this conversation, we touch on topics like the role of percussion in Scandinavian traditional music, the relationship between music and dance, and what it means for a drummer or a guitar player to identify as a folk musician today.

We also speak about The Folk Music Academy, a very ambitious online learning resource that Jens’s is working working on together with Norwegian fiddler Olav Mjelva. This is definitely something I want to come back to in later episodes.

This is also the first episode that I’ve been able to record in person, which was a great feeling! Hopefully it will be possible for me to do more of these in the future. Big thanks to the great folk music venue Riksscenen for letting us use on of their stages for this recording.
