Faroese ballads & Transatlantic Folk, with Raske Drenge

About the episode

In this episode of the show I’m speaking with Ragnar Finsson and Oscar Beerten from the Faroese-Belgian duo Raske Drenge. I’ve been wanting to have these guys on the show for a while now, but the timing right now is actually perfect since they are releasing their debut album this week.

So far, I’ve only heard a couple of their tracks, but I’m already a big fan. Definitely recommend everyone to check out their music, which I think it’s a really nice mix of modern and traditional folk music. I especially like Ragnar’s singing in the Faroese language and also Oscar’s very innovative approach to the Hardanger Fiddle.

Now, in addition to talking about their music and their new album, we touch on things like the history of the Faroe Islands, the art of being in a successful band together and how push the boundaries of the folk music genre. It was also interesting for me hearing about Oscar’s experiences when it comes to learning Norwegian traditional music as a non-Norwegian.

Really enjoyed this chat with the guys, hope I get to hear them play live in the near future!

Make sure to check out the album! Links below
